Earlier this week Barca Universal claimed that Al-Hilal were willing to fork out £245million for the Argentine genius.

According to reports in Marca, both clubs are willing to pay Messi a huge '£306m' per season, eclipsing the £175m his old rival Ronaldo earns.

Messi and Ronaldo are known to be lifelong rivals, battling for every top trophy or award in Europe before the ex-Manchester United man joined Al Nassr in December 2022.

The proposed deal by Al-Itihad will make Messi the highest-paid athlete in the history of football, topping the $215million currently being paid to Ronaldo by Al Nassr.

Paris Saint-Germain is however confident of Messi penning a contract extension, as they have come up with several added bonuses in the new deal that may extend up to 2025.

Messi mark World Cup return with sublime goal

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Lionel Messi marked his return to club football in style, scoring in his first post-World Cup match for Paris Saint-Germain.

The 35-year-old world champion found the back of the net as PSG returned to winning ways, posting a 2-0 victory over Angers on Wednesday evening.

Messi was afforded an extended break after playing a starring role in Argentina's World Cup triumph in December, returning to training in the first week of the New Year.
