Muhammadu Buhari, the President of Nigeria, has expressed sadness over the demise of Brazilian football icon Pele, who passed away on Thursday night, 29 December.

As far as football is concerned, Pele lived a fulfilled life and was a role model and hero to many footballers and fans around the world.

After long battle with cancer, the three-time World Cup winner died at Albert Einstein Jewish Hospital in Sao Paulo, leaving children and grandchildren behind.

According to the statement on Facebook released by Garba Shehu, who is the Senior Special Assistant to the President, Buhari said that Pele will never be forgotten.

Buhari lauds the iconic Pele

“May he rest in peace. He led a good life, and made a huge contribution to the development of global football in particular and world sport in general."

Buhari mentioned Pele's generous spirit and humility despite his greatness in the field of sports.

“He also built bridges across nations, races and even religions. He was a UN Ambassador of goodwill. Pele is gone, but the world will never forget him. RIP.''

The President of Nigeria is among many to react to the Brazilian legend's passing.

Pele celebrated mother’s 100th birthday

Earlier, Sports Brief had reported how the longevity of the Pele family is probably something that should be studied for future generations.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, more popularly known as Pele, succumbed to colon cancer on December 29 at age 82.

His biological mother is among the close family members who will have to come to terms with the demise of the football icon. Celeste Arantes recently turned 100 years old and still lives in Santos.

Pele had huge respect and admiration for his mother, who he credited with greatly impacting his career. He penned a heartwarming message to her on November 20, when she turned 100 years old.
