  • Kevin De Bruyne returned to Manchester City after his poor World Cup outing with Belgium
  • KDB is targeting more trophies under Pep Guardiola after the Spaniard extended his contract
  • Manchester City are currently five points behind Arsenal in the race for Premier League glory

Kevin De Bruyne had a World Cup to forget, as Belgium's golden generation blanked at another major tournament in what could be their final outing together.

He has now returned to Manchester City, where the club hopes to catch Arsenal, who are five points clear in the race for the Premier League title.

City boss Pep Guardiola recently signed a new contract to extend his stay at the Manchester club until 2025, while 31-year-old KDB is targeting more trophies as he hopes to put behind him the disappointment of the World Cup.

Manchester City have been England's most successful club since Guardiola took over, winning four of the last five Premier League titles. The UEFA Champions League is the only trophy missing from the club's cabinet.

KDB moves past World Cup

The Belgian playmaker revealed he has moved on from World Cup disappointment in an interview with Daily Mail, as quoted by Manchester Evening News:

''It was obviously a disappointing World Cup campaign for us. We have had some successful major tournaments in previous years and unfortunately, this was not one of them."

De Bruyne said his focus was now on furthering the strong first half of the season by Manchester City, to give the club the best chance of claiming more silverware at the season's end.

De Bruyne praises Guardiola's influence

KDB also commented on Guardiola's new contract, which was signed weeks ago, and praised the Spaniard's influence.

''It was great news to hear while we were away. Pep has done so much for this club and I am sure he will continue doing that. We want to win every single game and every competition that we play in, and Pep’s impact on helping us try to achieve that is huge.''

KDB slammed for Mundial comments

Sports Brief earlier reported that former Chelsea man KDB was criticised for comments about his Belgium teammates, when asked about their World Cup chances.

De Bruyne said the Red Devils are too old, even though they were not the oldest squad at the World Cup, saying their chance had passed by in 2018.

Belgium crashed out at the group stages, as Croatia and Morocco qualified from the group to finish third and fourth in the tournament respectively.
