Lionel Messi recreated Diego Maradona's iconic pose from 1986, as he finally won the trophy that has eluded him for his entire football career.

Argentina clinched the 2022 FIFA World Cup after they defeated France 4-2 on penalties, following a completely ludicrous 120 minutes of football.

La Albiceleste's triumph over Les Bleus ended a 36-year drought for the South American country, who last won the ultimate prize in 1986 thanks to Maradona.

In the case of the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner, it was his best friend, Sergio Aguero who carried him all over the field.

Messsi had an outstanding tournament, leading his side with seven goals to lift the World Cup for the first time in 36 years.

In a thrilling final against France, the veteran striker scored a brace, but the game was forced to penalties following a 3-3 draw after 120 minutes.

His Paris Saint-Germain teammate, Kylian Mbappe was in sensational form, netting all three goals for France in an epic final.

Despite France's resilience, Emi Martinez came to the rescue of the South Americans, saving two penalties as Argentina won the game 4-2 after a shootout.

Messi wears Arabian cloak

Just before Messi was about to lift the World Cup trophy after Argentina had beaten France to win the 2022 tournament, a Qatari royal dressed the PSG star in a traditional garment.

Known as bisht in the Arab world, the garment is a common traditional attire worn on special occasions such as weddings and Islamic festivals including Eid - a holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, and Eid-ul-Adha - a celebration of Abraham's sacrifice.

For the people of Qatar, who were represented by an Emir during the trophy presentation, they wanted their first World Cup as host to be celebrated as well as make it a Messi moment.

Messi wins best player

Messi has been crowned Player of the Tournament after leading Argentina to the 2022 FIFA World Cup title, Sports Brief earlier reported.

The Argentina star netted a brace as the South Americans defeated France on penalties to win their third global football title.

Messi beat Paris Saint-Germain teammate Mbappe to the top award, while the France forward won the golden boot after netting a hat-trick in the final.
