  • A football fan had an absolute howler as he predicted Argentina was going to win the World Cup, in rugby
  • The fan inadvertently placed the bet thinking he had gambled on the World Cup final between Argentina and France
  • Argentina are not as good in rugby as they are at football, although they are ranked eighth in the world

One football fan had the shock of his life when he realized he had place a bet on the wrong Argentina team to win the World Cup.

By now, there is a high chance La Albiceleste will claim the most coveted trophy in World football after making their way to the final, where they will meet defending champions France.

For one punter, he thought he was on his way to an extraordinary amount of money after staking a mere £38 on a massive 28/1 odds for Argentina to win the World Cup.

If it came to fruition, he was in line to reap an impressive £1,064 from Argentina’s World Cup triumph.

There was only one problem, however, as he had bet on Argentina to win the rugby World Cup.

From the odds alone, it was simply too good to be true, and the poor chap’s friend took to Twitter to share the hilarious but painful gaffe.

"My mate thought he had Argentina to win the World Cup the whole tournament, I thought the odds were too good to be true, turns out he betted on the Rugby World Cup." A twitter user with the handle @LukeCarey1881 posted.

The tweet has since gone viral, racking up more than 2300 retweets and 39,000 likes.

When is the rugby World Cup?

As the Qatar World Cup final draws closer, the punter must have surely grown suspicious of his bet, and this is presumably how he found out his massive error.

The Rugby World Cup takes place in 2023, and champions South Africa will attempt to defend their crown, per SportBible.

It is highly unlikely Argentine will win the rugby World Cup as they are ranked eighth in the world, hence their 28/1 odds.

Back in football and Lionel Messi and his teammates will be hoping to make amends for the heartbreak in 2014 when they lost the World Cup final against Germany.

According to bookmarkers, France are the slight favourites to win a second World Cup in a row.

Benzema to rejoin France squad

Meanwhile, Sports Brief reported on Karim Benzema’s availability for France ahead of the World Cup final showdown.

Reports claim Real Madrid are not going to stop Benzema from traveling to Qatar for the 2022 FIFA World Cup final to cheer the France team against Argentina.

Benzema who was initially named in France’s 26-man squad for the World Cup missed the tournament after picking up a thigh injury on the eve of the competition.
