An emotional video has emerged on social media of Moroccan players consoling Cristiano Ronaldo, after the final whistle of their quarter-final match against Portugal.

Going into this clash, the Selecao were tipped to progress based on how they defeated Switzerland in the knockout, but the Atlas Lions reigned supreme.

How it happened

Portugal coach Santos decided to start Ramos again ahead of Ronaldo against Morocco, but he was unable to break the defense of the African giants.

The veteran striker came on in the second half and had two shots on target, but the former Manchester United star was unable to help his country.

Walid Cheddira was sent off in the added minutes of the encounter, but Portugal were still unable to restore parity, as En-Nesyri's 42nd minute goal gave Morocco the win 1-0.

According to a video spotted on Twitter, two Moroccan players saw the mood of Ronaldo after the final whistle and rushed to console him.

Although Ronaldo has not made final decision about his international career or his club future, this is expected to be his last World Cup.

Ronaldo to fly home separately

Earlier, Sports Brief had reported how Ronaldo opted to stay in Qatar, joining a list of Portugal footballers not yet heading home after their World Cup exit.

The Selecao were shocked by Morocco on December 10, as a solo strike from Youssef En-Nesyri ensured that an African team qualified for the semi-finals for the very first time.

Ronaldo was distraught after the final whistle, with images and video showing the five-time Ballon d'Or winner crying in defeat.
