Key among the ecstatic Frenchmen was the competition's top scorer, Kylian Mbappe, who celebrated wildly after seeing Kane sky his effort from the spot, Daily Mail reports.

In a video shared on Twitter, seen by Sports Brief, the 23-year-old was full of unbridled joy as he yelled and posed as if he had scored a match-winning goal.

Unfortunately for Kane and England, France held on to thwart a late onslaught from the 1966 world champions to reach back-to-back semi-finals, as they pursue a third World Cup title.

Okocha explains why Kane missed

Former Nigerian international Jay-Jay Okocha believes Kane was nervous before taking a second spot kick against France.

The Three Lions crashed out of the ongoing 2022 FIFA World Cup, following a 2-1 loss to Les Blues in the quarter-final.

Aurelien Tchouameni opened the scoring in the 17th minute for France, when he fired home a stunner from outside the area to give his side the lead.

Giroud sends France to semis

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Olivier Giroud continued World Cup magnificence, by scoring France's late winner in their quarter-final against England on Saturday.

France are now just two games away from becoming the first team in 60 years to retain the trophy, after Giroud's fourth goal of the tournament sunk an impressive Three Lions side.

The holders took the lead through Tchouameni, but were pegged back early in the second half and were on the ropes for long spells, before Giroud headed in the decisive goal in the 78th minute to seal a 2-1 victory.
