  • Croatia equalised late in extra time to take the game to penalties
  • Tite's side lost on penalties, their second quarter-final exit in a row, to Croatia

Brazil's 2022 World Cup ended in agonising fashion as 2018 finalists Croatia shockingly knocked them out on penalties.

Brazil took the lead late during the first half of extra time through a sensational goal from Neymar Junior but in perfect Croatian fashion, they scored a late goal to level matters through Bruno Petkovic.

The Croatians had momentum after Neymar's record-equaling goal but the Croatian side, who beat Japan on penalties in the Round of 16 showed their valuable experience.

Croatian keeper Dominik Livakovic was on top form as he denied Brazil several times. This is their second successive semi-final appearance and stunned the football world by knocking favourites Brazil out.

Reaction to Croatia's win

On social media, fans were as stunned as the Brazil fans all over the world as to how they lost to a team that offered little threat.

Zlatko Dalic's side have repeated some of the success of their run to the 2018 World Cup final in Russia, where all of their knockout games bar the final went to extra time, according to Sporting News.

Here are some of the reactions from fans.

@twitar10222 trolled Brazil for the dancing.

"They going to dance at home now."

@mike_h1990 felt for the five-time World Cup winners.

"Just a brutal way to lose. Were minutes away from advancing."

@rabha004 feels although Saudi Arabia beating Argentina is considered the biggest upset, Croatia beating the favourites is huge.

"Talk about upset this is the biggest of them all."

@dkkolodziej called Luka Modric led side lucky.

"Croatia won twice on penalties. There is no luckier team in this World Cup."

@SauceBoss347 thinks Neymar, who scored the superb opener should've taken the first penalty which fell to Rodrygo, who missed.

"Idk why they didn’t have Neymar shoot first. Big L for Brazil."

@2013Seahawks felt the South American giants have not lived up to their hype for a long time.

"Brazil is so overrated constantly, they've been average the last 20 years."

Others felt Brazil coach Tite was out of depth tactically against an organised side.

@DDMU20

"Brazil isn’t tactically good enough. They let Modric control the midfield, and it did cost them at the end massively. Hats off to Croatia, they are making it further than anyone thought again, after 4 years with mostly the same players."

@rudresh_ranaswi

"Brazil's tactics are to blamed for this loss, subbing Vinicious wasn't right. Inexperienced Rodrygo going to take first penalty, also, Allison has poor record in shootout."

Croatia will face the winner between Netherlands and Argentina. Brazil were tipped to go all the way due to their firepower but fell short at the quarters for the second time in a row.

Croatia beat Brazil

Sports Brief earlier reported on Croatia shocking Brazil to on penalties progress to the 2022 World Cup semi-finals.

Marquinhos missed the crucial spot-kick in the shoot-out, hitting the post when he had to score to keep Brazil in it after Rodrygo's earlier attempt had been saved by goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic and Croatia converted all four penalties.

They advance to the semi-finals, while Brazil will have to wait at least another four years before winning a record-extending sixth title.
