- Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence amid reports he wanted to quit the Portugal team
- The 37-year-old was unexpectedly benched for the Round of 16 clash against Switzerland
- Then came reports that the veteran striker had friction with team coach Fernando Santos
Cristiano Ronaldo has made his stance on the Portugal national team clear, amid reports he was ready to walk away from the World Cup.
The former Manchester United man’s statement came just hours after the Portugal FA also released a statement to clear the air of any false reports.
On Wednesday, December 7, there were scathing reports from Portuguese media suggesting Ronaldo could walk away from his team midway through the World Cup, because he was discontent with being benched.
Footage after the Switzerland win also seemed to show the veteran walking off the pitch early, as the rest of his teammates appreciated their fans following the emphatic 6-1 win.

Days later and Ronaldo has come out with a defiant statement, insisting his national team remain united in the wake of the damaging reports.
“A group too close to be broken by outside forces. A nation too brave to let itself be frightened by any adversary. A team in the truest sense of the word, which will fight for the dream until the end! Believe with us! Strength, Portugal!” he shared via Twitter.
So far in Qatar, the star striker has netted just once, in his nation’s Group H opener against Ghana.
Previously, he appeared to infuriate his coach by making a controversial gesture, as he was being taken off during the 2-1 defeat to South Korea on December 2.
Ronaldo’s sister slams Santos
Sports Brief also reported on how Ronaldo’s sister slammed coach Santos for his decision to bench her superstar sibling.
Elma Aveiro has been a fierce defender of the veteran and has developed a reputation for always opposing anything or anyone who seems to be against the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
She shared an image on Instagram along with the caption translated as follows: 'You stayed on the bench and how good, you stayed resting. Letting others play is also part, and getting tired for what?'
