How social media reacted:

Ronaldo benched for Swiss clash

Ronaldo was left on the bench for Portugal’s crucial Round of 16 clash against Switzerland, in the biggest team news of the day.

The new development came on the heels of reports that Selecao manager Fernando Santos was displeased with his star for his gesture, during the defeat to South Korea several days ago.

On Friday, Ronaldo was withdrawn midway through the second half and while walking off, he put his index finger in his mouth as if gesturing to someone to keep quiet.

Ramos scores stunner

Santos' decision to bench Portugal captain Ronaldo in the World Cup round of 16 paid off, as replacement striker Goncalo Ramos netted a cracking goal against Switzerland.

The 21-year-old scored a stunner in 17th minute to give his team a 1-0 lead at the Lusail Stadium on Tuesday night.

It was Ramos’ first goal for the Europeans in the World Cup, and is his second international goal overall.

Santos speaks about Ronaldo

Earlier, Sports Brief had reported how Portugal boss Santos disclosed why he benched Ronaldo for their World Cup Round of 16 cracker.

Santos relegated the veteran striker to the bench during the Tuesday night encounter, with the tactician starting youngster Ramos instead.

The former Manchester United forward was only introduced in the match with just 17 minutes left, as Pepe paved the way for him to appear.
