Former Real Madrid midfielder Mesut Ozil has heaped praises on Olivier Giroud for his record-breaking goal for France.

Giroud, 36, opened the scoring for Les Bleus as they edged Poland 3-1 in the knockout phase of the 2022 World Cup on Sunday afternoon.

The former Chelsea attacker thus surpasses legendary Arsenal striker Thierry Henry as France's all-time top scorer with 52 goals.

But is now clear at the top of a notable chart after finding the target in a last-16 showdown with Poland.

In reaction, Giroud's former teammate at Arsenal joked that he taught the striker how to finish the way he did.

"Nice goal... who taught you that bro," Ozil tweeted.

Giroud and Ozil spent five seasons together at the Emirates before departing in 2018 and 2021 respectively.

The AC Milan forward can add to his tally in the quarterfinal against the winner of England vs Senegal.

It is worth noting that the ex-Chelsea attacker managed to score 52 goals in 117 matches for France, whereas Henry took 123 games to do so.

At his age, Giroud has re-written the history books as the oldest goalscorer in the nation’s history.

Giroud famously failed to fire in a shot on target at the 2018 World Cup, as Les Bleus emerged victorious, but is now playing a leading role for Didier Deschamps’ side as they counter the injury-enforced absence of Karim Benzema.

Giroud proud to be levelled

Sports Brief earlier reported that Olivier Giroud said it means a lot to be levelled with France legend Thierry Henry after he scored his 51st international goal a week ago.

He has now surpassed the record to become the number scoring player for the France national team and he would be so proud of what he has done.

There is still time for Giroud to improve his tally for France before he retires internationally and leaves the stage for others to chase, particularly Kylian Mbappe.
