The four-time World Cup winners were stunned by Japan in their opening match, losing 2-1. Despite dominating most of the match and leading 1-0 for large parts, Japan scored twice in the second half to produce a massive upset.

Although they improved against Spain, they could only draw 1-1 with the 2010 winners. They thumped Costa Rica 4-2 in their final group game, but the damage was already done.

Japan's monumental win over Spain meant the win was a mere consolation for the Germans, who exited the competition at the group stage for the second time in a row, according to ESPN.

Musiala speaks

Musiala was Germany's best player by some distance at the tournament, and by the 2026 edition, he will be one of the world's top players.

The 19-year-old's heroics were not enough to help Germany progress, but it was an unforgettable performance. He took to Twitter to react after the painful exit had sunk in.

"At the moment, it is still difficult for me to find the right words. This World Cup should be more for us, we have planned much more. Definitely! The disappointment is huge right now.."

He also revealed his plans for 2023.

"I will process this experience in the coming weeks and use it to learn from it. In 2023 I will attack with full motivation. Thank you very much for your great support and messages - that means a lot to me ."

Musiala started all three of Germany’s games. He completed 19 dribbles, which is more than any other player in the group stages, according to Who Scored.

He assisted Germany’s equaliser against Spain, which was a reward for his outstanding performance.

Musiala at Real Madrid?

Sports Brief earlier reported on Germany and Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger saying Musiala is good enough to play for the Spanish giants.

The defender heaped a lot of praise on the Bayern Munich youngster, lauding his ability and his character.

Los Blancos are also looking to invest for the future, and Musiala would be a great addition to the squad. The youngster is able to play as a midfielder and as an attacker.
