  • Football pundit Gary Lineker’s comments on England’s squad selection against Senegal has rubbed sections the wrong way
  • Lineker seemed to suggest England should rest Kyle Walker for when The Three Lions faces France
  • Some fans branded these comments disrespectful towards Senegal, since England were yet to qualify for the quarter-finals

England legend and BBC presenter Gary Lineker left a section of fans angry for comments he made regarding the England-Senegal round of 16 World Cup clash.

Senegal is only one of two African nations to progress to the last 16 of the competition, but will face a difficult challenge to advance to the quarter-finals as they have to beat last World Cup’s semi-finalists.

Ahead of the clash scheduled to take place on Sunday, December 4, a number of pundits had different opinions ahead of the showpiece.

For Lineker, he had a rather controversial take on how he wished Gareth Southgate would line up his squad with bearing future games in mind.

"Kyle Walker should not be in England's team to play Senegal, and I'll tell you exactly why.” He started as quoted on SportBible.
"We cannot afford - England cannot afford for Walker to get injured, because he's probably just about the only full-back on the planet that can deal with Kylian Mbappe, and that is the French team.
"How would you take the risk, why would you take the risk of him getting injured?"

These comments, despite being analytical from a football perspective, did not sit well with some fans, who felt like Lineker was disregarding Senegal.

Here are some of the comments from disgruntled fans:

"This is why everyone hates us. Senegal are not going to roll over, it’s not a straightforward knockout tie. It’s very close to call and you’re already talking about France? Arrogant in the extreme.
Here we go again, the most overhyped football team in history. This is why I DO NOT listen to the first 45mins of these shows, it's all about England when they aren't playing.
“We should just play the game in front of us and not be so arrogant to think we are going to win it by talking about the next game”
“Taking it for granted that England will beat Senegal and play France, how English is that!”

Walker has been struggling with a groin injury at Manchester City, and has not played for his club since October.

He however somehow managed to get fit in time for the World Cup, and is very crucial for England’s backline, especially because of his pace.

Gabriel Jesus ruled out of the rest of the World Cup

Elsewhere, Sports Brief reported on Gabriel Jesus’ woes as the Arsenal man was ruled out for the rest of the World Cup.

The former Man City star started for Brazil in their 1-0 defeat to Cameroon on Friday, but was substituted shortly after the hour mark.

Brazil's team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar revealed after the match that there were injury worries over both Jesus and Alex Telles.
