Austin Jay-Jay Okocha still holds the record for the most successful dribbles ever recorded in a FIFA World Cup, 28 years after setting the mark.

Okocha was one of Nigeria’s standout players at the 1994 FIFA World Cup, and the little magician was practically unplayable in the round-of-16 tie against Italy.

Okocha made a total of 15 successful dribbles against the Italians, to set the record for the most successful dribbles in a football match at the World Cup.

The Super Eagles would eventually lose out to the Azzurri, after two late goals from Roberto Baggio canceled out Emmanuel Amuneke’s 26th-minute opener.

Since the inception of the World Cup in 1966, no other player has recorded more dribbles than Okocha, with only Jamal Musiala of Germany coming close at the 2022 edition with 13.

Okocha breaks Paul Gascoigne record

Meanwhile, prior to Okocha setting the record for the most dribbles in a FIFA World Cup, that feat was jointly held by England hero Paul Gascoigne and Brazil icon Jairzinho, All Nigeria Soccer reported.

Both players registered thirteen successful dribbles each at the 1990 edition in Italy and at the 1970 Mundial in Mexico respectively.

Italy's Sandro Mazzola, Germany's Reinhard Libuda, Barcelona legends Johan Cruyff and Diego Maradona, and Portugal's Eusébio registered twelve dribbles each in a World Cup game.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that legendary Nigeria midfielder Okocha remains one of the most popular African footballers in the Bundeslinga's history.

The 48-year-old dazzled fans in Germany's top flight and worldwide with his amazing skills, trickery, and flair.

The former Paris Saint-Germain star is admiringly remembered by fans of German club Eintracht Frankfurt, where he played for the reigning Europa League winners between 1992 and 1996.
