Morocco have set an incredible record at the 2022 World Cup, following their thrilling win over Canada on Thursday evening, December 1.

The African football giants humbled Canada 2-1 in their final Group F clash, staged at Al Thumama Stadium, to ink their name in the history books.

The win saw the Atlas Lions finish as Group F winners with seven points, two points ahead of the 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia, who had to settle for a second-place finish.

According to ESPN, Morocco are now the first African team to win a World Cup group this century.

How Morocco sunk Canada

The Walid Regragui-tutored side needed just four minutes after the blow of the whistle to take the lead, with Chelsea forward Hakim Ziyech netting the opener.

Achraf Hakimi and En-Nesyri combined for the second, with the latter latching on to the Paris Saint-Germain full-back's pinpoint pass to double the lead.

Canada had to rely on an own goal from Nayef Aguerd to pull one back, minutes before the break.

Neither side was able to find the back of the net in the second half of the match, which ended in a 2-1 win for the Atlas Lions.

Morocco erase 36-year history

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that on December 1, Morocco broke a 36-year record of not reaching the group stages of the World Cup, following their 2-1 win over Canada in their last group game.

The last time the Atlas Lions reached the group stages of the World Cup was in 1986, and they have failed to advance many times since.

The African nation has had an amazing outing in Qatar so far, having finished as leaders in Group F ahead of Croatia, and eliminated countries Belgium and Canada.
