Morocco on Thursday evening, 1 December, broke 36-year record of them not reaching the group stages of the World Cup following their 2-1 over Canada in their last group game.

The last time the Atlas Lions reached the group stages of the World Cup was in 1986, and since then they have been trying and as all efforts have been futile.

Lukaku missed an open goal

Earlier, Sports Brief had reported how Romelu Lukaku missed a gilt-edge opportunity as Belgium's uninspiring campaign at the 2022 World Cup ended disappointingly.

Belgium crashed out of this year's Mundial following their goalless draw with 2018 finalist Croatia at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium on Thursday, December 1.

Needing a win and results from the other group game to go in their favour, Belgium had no other option than to secure a win in their do-or-die showdown with Croatia, however, Roberto Martinez's charges failed spectacularly.

After failing to find the back of the net in the first half, Roberto Martinez threw in Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard in search of a goal after recess.

Unfortunately for Martinez, his substitution failed to yield the expected result with Croatia holding on to seal qualification to the last 16 alongside dark horses Morocco, who topped Group F.

Referee bizarrely cancels penalty

Sports Brief also reported how fans were left with loads of questions on Thursday, December 1 after a strange refereeing decision during the Belgium-Croatia game.

The crunch Group F clash between the two heavyweights had everything at stake for qualification into the last 16, with Belgium needing a win to progress.

For Croatia, they only needed a point in the game, provided Morocco beat Canada in the other match.

In what was a fairly dull first half that was devoid of goalmouth action, the game sparked to life thanks to an incident.
