Rio Ferdinand described Lionel Messi as an “alien” following his incredible performance for Argentina in their 2-0 win against Poland on Wednesday, November 30.

Messi was the star of the show despite having a penalty saved by Wojciech Szczesny as Argentina secured passage to the round of 16 at the World Cup.

According to Eurosport, Ferdinand praised Messi’s influence in the Argentine team as he concurred that the 35-year-old was the best player in the game against Poland.

“He wasn’t even at his best today but the best three or four dribbles in the game were by Messi and the best three or four passes in the game were by Messi and he was the best player in the pitch.”

Alexis Mac Allister and Julian Alvarez scored the goals as Argentina finished top of Group C. They will next face Australia in the last 16.

Szczesny reveals penalty wager with Messi

Meanwhile, Wojciech Szczesny has revealed that he lost a €100 bet with Lionel Messi over the penalty incident during Argentina's win over Poland, Goal reports.

Szczesny had placed a €100 bet with Messi as he was confident referee Danny Makkelie would not point to the spot after checking VAR following an incident with Argentina's captain.

Szczesny however lost the bet as Makkelie gave the penalty, and he has jokingly admitted that he is now expecting to be punished.

Messi sets unwanted record in Qatar

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Lionel Messi has set an unwanted record in Qatar during the ongoing 2022 World Cup.

The Paris Saint-Germain ace was part of Argentina's squad that played Poland in their final Group C clash on Wednesday night, November 30, at Stadium 974.

Argentina needed to pick maximum points during the clash to increase their chances of reaching the knockouts, having picked just three points from two of their opening fixtures.
