  • Mexican boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez has admitted he was in the wrong in threatening Argentina's captain Lionel Messi
  • According to the boxing champion, emotion got the better of him and has now recognized his wrongdoing
  • Messi has been on the receiving end of vile tweets from Mexican boxer Canelo Alvarez who accused him of disrespecting Mexico

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez has issued a public apology to Lionel Messi and Argentina after accusing the seven-time Ballon d'or winner of disrespecting the Mexican jersey.

Messi netted a stupendous goal as Argentina got their World Cup campaign back on track with a comfortable 2-0 win over Mexico on Saturday.

After the game, the 35-year-old exchanged jerseys with a Mexican player as he headed to the changing room to lead the celebrations.

Alvarez then launched a scathing attack on Messi on social media, threatening him and saying he hopes he doesn't meet the Argentina captain.

The boxing champion's outburst elicited immediate responses from his compatriot Andres Guadrado, Sergio Aguero and Cesc Fabregas, who defended Messi and claimed there was nothing unusual about a football jersey being on the floor after a match.

Now, days after the incident, Alvarez has apologised to Messi and Argentinians for his actions, saying he had overreacted.

“I was carried away by the passion and love I feel for my country and I made comments that were out of place for which I want to apologize to Messi and the people of Argentina,” he posted on Twitter.
“Every day we learn something new and this time it was my turn.
“I wish both teams much success in their matches today and will continue supporting Mexico until the end.”

Alvarez vs Messi: what happened?

Sports Brief reported that the WBA, WBC, WBO and IBF super middleweight world champion was angry about Messi's actions after the South Americans beat Mexico, calling him disrespectful.

After Argentina beat Mexico 2-0, a video of Argentina players celebrating in the dressing room went viral, as Messi was spotted with his feet touching a Mexican jersey.

The video, which has been widely shared on Twitter, shows the Argentine talisman unintentionally pushing a Mexico jersey aside with his foot as he attempts to take off his shoes.
