A section of fans has backed Cameroon's Vincent Aboubakar to win the goal of the tournament at the ongoing 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Aboubakar was part of his side's team that secured a 3-3 thrilling draw against Serbia, in an epic Group G clash played at the Al Janoub Stadium on Monday, November 28.

The former Porto and Besiktas forward came off the bench to inspire the Indomitable Lions to the vital result.

At the time, the African football giants were trailing Serbia 3-1, after Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic had just swept home his first goal of the tournament.

Mitrovic's goal gave his team a two-goal advantage over Cameroon and looked set to cart home the three points.

However, the introduction of Aboubakar changed the matrix, with the Cameroonian star pulling one back for his side in the 63rd minute.

Aboubakar's goal was no ordinary finish, as the 30-year-old employed a piece of art and skill to find the back of the net.

The Cameroonian ace spectacularly beat the offside trap, latching onto a perfect pass and calmly scooping an audacious strike over the top of a helpless Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, who was between the sticks for Serbia.

His goal sparked suggestions from a section of fans who claimed Aboubakar should be awarded the goal of the season prize.

One said:

“Aboubakar with the goal of the tournament."

A second added:

"That Aboubakar goal might just be goal of the tournament."

Another observed:

“Aboubakar with one of the best performances by an individual player in this World Cup."

Cameroon fans blast Song, Eto’o

Sports Brief earlier reported that Cameroon fans are upset with team manager Rigobert Song and the country’s FA president Samuel Eto’o, following the decision to send goalkeeper Andre Onana packing from the tournament.

Onana was billed to man the post for the Indomitable Lions in their all-important tie with Serbia, but was reportedly dropped on the back of a showdown with his coach.

Second choice Devis Epassy was in goal against the Europeans, and the shot-stopper conceded three goals in the encounter as it ended 3-3.
