  • Germany were crowned champions of the world after they beat Argentina in the 2014 World Cup final
  • The German side have only secured one victory in their past five games in the World Cup tournament
  • Sweden are the only side to be beaten by the German team in the FIFA World Cup since the 2014 final

Germany are among the giants of world football, but their recent performances in the tournament paint a very different picture.

Hansi Flick’s men came into the 2022 tournament as one of the favourites, but a loss and a draw in their opening two games has severely threatened that.

Germany’s problems haven’t just started now, though. In fact, they have only won one game since they were crowned world champions in 2014, Goal noted.

The German side lifted the trophy in 2014, beating Argentina 1-0 in the final. Their run to the final saw them thrash Brazil 7-1, a game which won’t be forgotten in a hurry.

A dismal 2018 tournament

Going into the tournament in Russia, much was expected of the German side. However, they were dumped out in the group stages after only picking up three points from their three games.

As reported by CBS Sports, Germany lost to South Korea and Mexico, and only beat Sweden. Fast forward four years later and Germany’s poor run continued as they lost to Japan before salvaging a draw against Spain.

Germany will now need to beat Costa Rica in their final game if they are to stand any chance of qualifying from the group. Spain tops the group with four points, while Costa Rica and Japan are on three points each. Germany only have one point.

July 13 is a day that Argentinians will never forget. It is, however, a day that all of Germany will celebrate.

July 13 saw both sides contesting the FIFA World Cup final in Brazil, a match in which Germany won 1-0.

What made the game remarkable and heartbreaking was how the German team won, Sports Brief earlier reported.
