A dyed-in-the-wool football fan demonstrated his unconditional love for the sport by doing the unthinkable.

The fan, sporting a Mexico jersey, disclosed he eloped to Qatar to witness the 2022 FIFA World Cup with monies intended for his wedding.

In a photo shared on social media, seen by Sports Brief, the fan, clad in Mexico's 2022 World Cup jersey, held a placard sending a message to his fiancé.

After making public his unconventional gamble via his placard, the soccer fan issued an apology to his fiancé via a placard ahead of Mexico's World Cup game against Argentina.

It remains to be seen if his fiancé will forgive him for choosing the World Cup ahead of their wedding.

Despite the barrage of controversy which surrounded the start of the biggest football showpiece in Qatar, the first in the Middle East, the tournament has slowly warmed its way into the hearts of fans and neutrals alike, WRDE reports.

What was written on the placard?

"Dear fiancé, I'm sorry I used the wedding funds to come to Qatar," the fan wrote on the placard.

Mexico fans steal show in Qatar

Mexico fans certainly know how to bring the party atmosphere to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The Mexican side opened their World Cup account with a game against Poland, but the fans stole the show.

Before, during and after the game, Mexican fans made their voices heard as they outnumbered their Polish opposition.

Fan stuns Mourinho with touching proposal

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that a Roma fan decided to give his girlfriend a proposal she would never forget – in front of Jose Mourinho.

The ‘Special One’ initially posed for a photo with the couple, who initially looked like they simply wanted a photo with the gaffer.

But the male fan had other plans in mind because as soon as the photo with Mourinho was taken, he turned his attention to his lady and started to profess his love for her.
