Saudi Arabia delivered the biggest World Cup upset in recent history after inflicting a stunning 2-1 defeat on 2022 World Cup favourites Argentina.

The Saudi's started the game slowly, conceding a penalty in the 10th minute from Lionel Messi. Offside calls saved their blushes in the first half.

However, they began the second half with a bang suffocating Argentina and scoring two goals, stunning the football world.

Saudi Arabia also ended Argentina's 36-game unbeaten record, which is considered amongst the greatest upsets in the World Cup's 92-year history. What are some of the biggest upsets in World Cup history? Here are the top 5 upsets, according to FIFA.

1. France 0-1 Senegal - 2002

Senegal stunned defending World Cup and European champions in the 2002 tournament in their first-ever World Cup tournament. The late Papa Bouba Diop scored the only goal of the game.

2. Argentina 0-1 Cameroon - 1990

Again, unheralded Roger Milla-led Cameroon shocked Diego Maradona's Argentina with a 1-0 win. Argentina were defending champions, having won the tournament in 1986.

3. Italy 0-1 Costa Rica - 2014

The central Americans stunned European giants in 2014 in Brazil, a win which engineered a phenomenal run to the quarters where they lost to the Netherlands.

4. England 0-1 USA - 1950

The Englishmen had a big reputation in 1950, while the USA had no solid football tradition. At that time, this was a massive shock. The Americans have come a long way since then but are yet to reach the top echelons.

5. Italy 0-1 North Korea - 1966

North Korea were making their first appearance in the tournament and beat European giants, knocking them out of the tournament. They reached the quarters and took a 3-0 lead but lost the match 5-3.

6. West Germany 1-2 Algeria - 1982

Algeria were also making their first World Cup appearance, and stunned favourites West Germany. The Algerians exited the tournament at the group stages. West Germany reached the final but lost to Italy.

7. Korea Republic 2-1 - 2002

Hosts South Korea produced a memorable performance in 2002. They beat star-studded Italy in the Round of 16, beat Spain in the quarters then lost to Germany in the semis.

8. Brazil 1-2 Norway - 1998

Norway's win over Brazil was their second-ever win in the tournament as they shocked defending champions. They went on to lose in the Round of 16. Coincidentally, it was their last appearance at a World Cup.

9. Spain 2-3 Nigeria - 1998

Nigeria were undoubtedly one of the best football teams in the world in the 1990s. They won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and won gold at the 1996 Olympics. They beat a talented Spanish team in their second-ever World Cup but lost to Denmark in the last 16.

Scaloni blasted by fans

Sports Brief earlier reported that Argentina's manager was heavily criticized after the shock 2022 World Cup defeat to Saudi Arabia.

Lionel Scaloni decided against starting the in-form Lisandro Martinez, instead of going for Nicolas Otamendi in central defence.

Saudi Arabia came up with the upset of the tournament as they beat one of the favourites 2-1 after coming from behind.
