  • Qatar became the first host nation to lose their opening game when Enner Valencia's brace handed Ecuador a two-nil win in the curtain-raiser of the 2022 World Cup
  • While Valencia's strikes brought jubilation among the Ecuadorian crowd it was pure agony for the home fans, who could not help but watch the host nation crumble to defeat
  • The humbling defeat will serve as a wake-up call for Qatar as the Maroons square off against a Sadio Mane-less Senegal on Friday, November 25

An Ecuadorian fan got into the heads of a section of the home fans as he taunted them during the curtain-raiser of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The Middle East nation pulled off a remarkable opening ceremony which left the Al Bayt Stadium fully charged as two-thirds of the 60,000 capacity threw their weight behind Qatar.

However, the host nation endured a baptism of fire in their debut game at the Mundial as Ecuador romped to a two-nil lead before halftime.

In fact, the scoreline could have been worse but for the intervention of the Video Assistant Referee which correctly ruled out Enner Valencia's first strike out for offside, as noted by GOAL.

Ecuador's ruthless approach to the opening game of the first-ever World Cup in the Middle East ensured the home crowd had nothing to munch on with some section of the crowd leaving before full-time, Sky Sports reports.

In footage making the rounds on social media, spotted by Sports Brief, during the opening game, an Ecuadorian fan, literally with balls of steel, taunted the home crowd after Valencia had broken the game's deadlock.

Despite sitting in the midst of Qatari fans, the Ecuadorian stood to his feet gesturing a sign of money while telling the home fans to relax. His antics did not sit well with one Qatarian, who told him to shut up.

Qatar chalks unwanted record

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Qatar became the first home team to lose their opening World Cup match as Ecuador cruised to a 2-0 victory over the hosts, with Enner Valencia scoring twice in the tournament curtain-raiser on Sunday.

Asian champions Qatar enjoyed the backing of the majority of the crowd at the 60,000-capacity Al Bayt Stadium, but could not follow a glitzy opening ceremony with a statement performance.

Ecuador thought they had made a dream start when they silenced the home fans as Valencia headed in, only for the goal to be ruled out by VAR for an offside in the build-up.
