Celebrated American movie icon Morgan Freeman made an appearance at the opening ceremony of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Freeman alongside a Qatari poet Gandem Al Muftau opened the games with a message of unity, respect and community as the Gulf nation hosts the World Cup for the first time.

In photos posted on social media, Freeman with his splendid grey hair is seen walking in the middle of the Al Bayt stadium.

Freeman acknowledged the role football plays in uniting people and insists in these times of segregation, it is time for the world to come together.

"Football unites nations and their love for the beautiful game. What brings together nations also brings together communities," said Freeman.

A lovely video followed his presentation, showing how Arabs and other people from around the world started playing football together without prejudice.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is set to commence with hosts nation Qatar engaging Ecuador in the first match at the tournament.
