Mendy is due to appear in court on Friday, August 27 and has been suspended by Manchester City, pending an investigation.

BBC reports that the charges are connected to three complainants, all over the age of 16, and are said to have taken place between October 2020 and August 2021.

"Cheshire Constabulary and the Crown Prosecution Service would like to remind everyone that criminal proceedings against Mendy are live and that he has a right to a fair trial." A police spokesman said.

Mendy has been remanded in police custody as he awaits his appearance in court.

The left back joined Manchester City from Monaco in 2017 and has been part of three title-winning squads. He has also won the league cup twice.

Despite successes at Manchester City, Mendy’s playing time has been constantly hampered by injuries.

Manchester City, in their statement, said:

"Manchester City can confirm that following his being charged by police today, Benjamin Mendy has been suspended pending an investigation.”
"The matter is subject to a legal process and the club is therefore unable to make further comment until that process is complete."

If found guilty, this could mark the beginning of the end of Benjamin Mendy’s career both at Manchester City and as a football player.

Players who have seen their careers topple over similar charges include former Manchester City forward Adam Johnson and Brazilian footballer Robinho, who coincidentally also played for Man City at some point.

Manchester City draw PSG in Champions League group stage

Elsewhere, Manchester City will face off with Paris Saint Germain in the UEFA Champions League group stages as the draw was announced on Thursday, August 26.

Defending Champions Chelsea will begin their quest to retain the Champions League title with a mouthwatering clash against Juventus in Group H.

The most intimidating group of this season’s battle for club supremacy in Europe will probably be group B, which comprises Liverpool, FC Porto, Atletico Madrid and AC Milan.
