  • Former Chelsea striker Gianfranco Zola has backed the club to challenge for the Premier League title this season
  • The Blues had a slow start to the campaign under Thomas Tuchel but have since picked up pace after the arrival of Graham Potter
  • Having extended their unbeaten run under Potter to seven games against Brentford, Zola is confident his former side are firmly in the title race
  • The west Londoners currently occupy fourth place with 20 points, seven points behind league leaders Arsenal

Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola has maintained that the Blues' are firmly in the Premier League title race.

The west Londoners have shown a glimpse of improvement under new boss Graham Potter, who took charge of the club earlier in September after the sacking of Thomas Tuchel.

Potter remains unbeaten across competitions since his switch to Stamford Bridge from Brighton, with the Englishman leading his charges to seven games unbeaten.

Chelsea currently sit fourth in the Premier League table with 20 points after the opening 10 matches despite settling for a goalless draw with Brentford on Wednesday night.

The 20 points have them trailing league leaders and rivals Arsenal by seven points but are just three points behind second-placed Man City.

Zola, an ex-Blues striker, now contends his former side are on course to challenge for the Premier League title despite their struggles from earlier in the season.

According to the Italian, Chelsea's good squad gives them an edge to compete for titles this season.

"It’s still possible. Chelsea is a very good team and has a big squad, and they can be competitive in the Champions League and even in the league,' Gianfranco Zola told Amazon Prime via Daily Mail.
"I said before, you cannot rule out a team like Chelsea from the title race," he added.

Chelsea's biggest test yet this season will be on Saturday, October 22, when they face Man United at Stamford Bridge.

Kepa praised after a brilliant display

Sports Brief has also reported that Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga put in another man-of-the-match display to earn his side a precious point away to Brentford on Wednesday night.

Chelsea were dominant for most parts of the game, but the better chances of the game fell to Brentford. Kepa made impressive stops to keep his side in the game.

It has been a long walk back to redemption for the world's most expensive goalkeeper. He was largely unused under former manager Thomas Tuchel. Edouard Mendy's injury coincided with Graham Potter's appointment as Chelsea boss, and Kepa has been unplayable since.
