The World Cup is upon us again. Only this year it will not take place in summer but in winter.

That's because this year's World Cup will be played in the Middle Eastern country of Qatar.

By now, most people who want to go have already secured their tickets. But did you know that your World Cup entry ticket also counts as an entry visa to neighbouring Oman?

Winter World Cup this year

There has been a lot of hassle surrounding it, and on more than one occasion, it seemed the whole thing would be cancelled, but sure enough, football’s biggest event is just around the corner; the FIFA World Cup is set to start in just a few months.

The date it is scheduled for must have surely raised some eyebrows during the announcement.

Normally, the World Cup takes place in summer, but because this year it will be played in Qatar, which can get exceedingly hot during summer, the World Cup has been moved to winter this year.

This was done to protect the health of both the players and fans, as things like heatstroke were a very real possibility.

FIFA announced that over 23.5 million tickets have been sold to attend a World Cup match. Countries such as the United Kingdom, France, Brazil, Argentina and the United States have sold the most tickets.

In preparation for the tournament that starts on 20 November, the countries surrounding Qatar have taken the necessary measures to facilitate spectators who have tickets to the World Cup.

World Cup entry ticket valid as an entry visa for Oman

One of the countries that is keen to take advantage of the large stream of international travellers to Qatar is neighbouring Oman.

Recently, Oman Airports, a company that manages all civilian airports in Oman, announced that all travellers who have managed to get a ticket for the World Cup, also known as the Hayya Digital Card, can use that same ticket as an entry visa for Oman.

Thus, they will not have to apply for a separate visa when visiting Oman during or shortly after the World Cup.

The visa they receive with the ticket is a multiple entry visa that is valid for 60 days, which normally can cost up to £150. This means the same visa can be used to travel to Oman multiple times. However, on expiry, a new visa must be applied for.

In addition, the company has worked with Omani authorities on a plan to boost tourism in Oman.

They will do this by offering hotel stays and charter flights to matches in Qatar.

Enabling visa-free travel for countries from all over the world, the authorities hope this will bring more tourists to Oman, making Oman an ideal holiday destination to spend the winter.
