One of the most tragic stadium disasters in modern times happened on Saturday, October 1 as at last 127 people lost their lives after a football match in Indonesia.

Persebaya Surabaya controversially won the game 3-2, and this led to irate fans invading the stadium.

Videos and images of scenes from the stadium have since hit the internet, showing riot police ruthlessly going after the pitch invaders.

Police fired teargas into the crowd, and a stampede soon ensued.

Further reports claim 300 people were rushed to the hospital after the mayhem, but some passed away en route.

Doctors told local media that some victims suffered brain injuries, while a five-year old was among those who died in the chaos.

Two of those who died in the riots are police officers.

More controversially, it is further claimed that despite the stadium capacity being 38,000 people, 42,000 tickets had been issued for the fiery game.

Indonesia’s football league had called for football to be suspended for a week, but the country’s President Joko Widodo has ordered all matches to be postponed until investigations are complete.

In addition, Arema stadium has been banned from hosting matches for the rest of the season.
