  • Peter Obi has been branded ‘Bebeto’ by the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) party, Omoyele Sowore
  • The founder of Nigerian outlet Sahara Reporters also says Bola Tinubu of the APC is Pele and Zagallo combined
  • He then referred to the presidential candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, as ‘Zico’

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) party, Omoyele Sowore, has likened rival presidential aspirant Peter Obi to former Brazilian superstar Bebeto.

José Roberto Gama de Oliveira, simply called Bebeto, is a renowned former forward who was part of the Samba Boys squad that won the FIFA World Cup in 1994.

He scored 39 goals for the Brazilian national football team in just 75 international matches as he later took to coaching.

He went on to emerge the top scorer for his country at the 1989 Copa America before going on to play at three World Cup tournaments in which he scored six goals.

Bleacher reports that he often played second fiddle to a veritable superstar as his intelligent movement was often key to Brazil's attacks.

With barely five months to the presidential elections in Nigeria, Sowore, a human rights activist, took his rivals to the cleaners as he likened them to footballers.

According to him, Peter Obi, who is gradually making waves across the country, is ‘Bebeto’ while branding the candidate of the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate Bola Tinubu as ‘Pele and Zagallo’ combined.

He further labelled the presidential candidate of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, as ‘Zico’.

Sowore wrote on Facebook:

“Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is Pele and Zagallo combined, Atiku Abubakar is Zico, and Mr. Peter Obi is Bebeto-all of them can’t be part of our new line up! #WeCantContinueLikeThis.”

The post has generated comments from his followers as one wrote:

“Sowore is over 40years, meaning he cannot be on the national team like Obi. Just thinking.”

Another added:

“No sir, Peter Obi is Ibrahimovic.. the last of the older version, let’s enjoy his fading year and win Us Seria A Trophy ,get us qualified for champion league before retiring.”

An angry follower responded:

"And you are the Maguire of Nigeria."

Meanwhile, Sports Brief earlier reported that presidential hopeful Omoyele Sowore lambasted some ex-Super Eagles players for ‘endorsing’ APC chieftain Bola Tinubu who is also vying for the post of president of Nigeria.

The 2023 general elections are beginning to garner momentum as candidates continue to announce their intention to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari.

A number of former Super Eagles players, including Jay Jay Okocha and Kanu Nwankwo, will hit Lagos for a novelty match in honour of APC chieftain Bola Tinubu.
