Initially, the United Kingdom government had allowed football leagues to carry on with their matches slated for this weekend but left the final decision to the Premier League.

It had been widely anticipated that the government will suspend all sporting activities following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Queen Elizabeth II passed on on Thursday, September 8th, at the Balmoral Castle. A concise plan called Operation London Bridge was rolled out of how the nation was supposed to conduct itself after the longest-serving Monarch in history died.

Among them was the suspension of all activities as the country entered into a 12-day mourning period.

To honour her extraordinary life and contribution to the nation, and as a mark of respect, this weekend’s Premier League match round will be postponed, including Monday evening’s game.

However, The Athletic reports that the government has informed the Football Association that they can carry on with their matches as originally planned. The government has only directed that games planned on the day which the funeral will be held be rescheduled.

Arsenal was the only club the Queen ever hosted at Buckingham Palace

Sports Brief had previously reported it was a poorly kept secret that Queen Elizabeth II had a soft spot for Premier League side Arsenal. Whether she actually supported them will never be known as there were other rumours of her being a West Ham United supporter.

The Queen passed on on September 8th, 2022, at the Balmoral Castle, marking the end of the longest-serving Monarchs in history.

Queen Elizabeth has been eulogized as a true trailblazer of what the democracy of the United Kingdom embodies. Former player turned pundit Garry Lineker hailed her as a remarkable woman.
