Umtiti is a star center-back for the Serie-A club Lecce and the national team of France. Lyon and Barcelona clubs benefited from his defensive services as he emerged as a natural defensive leader. However, he has been injury-prone and missed many games in La Liga, which is why a portion of Samuel Umtiti's salary for the remaining 15 months of his contract was reduced in January 2022.

A mere two years later, in 2018, he was a key member of the World Cup-winning squad. In a semi-final match against Belgium, he scored the game's only goal.
