  • Al Ahly president Mahmoud El Khatib has all but confirmed what many suspected along
  • He claimed that a concerted campaign could have been behind Pitso Mosimane's resignation from the club
  • The South African coach was constantly hounded by sections of the fanbase, former players and media despite his success in Cairo

It was suspected all along, but now the truth is unofficially out in the open.

Pitso Mosimane's shocking resignation as Al Ahly coach could have come as the result of a campaign to see him forced out of the club, according to the club's president Mahmoud Al Khatib.

According to Goal, Al-Khatib said:

"We were completely blindsided when he told us that he was, physically and psychologically, unable to continue as the team’s head coach. We gave him 24 hours to think about his decision and after that period he decided to part ways with us in the end.

“By numbers and achievements, Mosimane made history in this club that nobody can deny it, but who was leading the campaign that was directed against him?”

Last month, TimesLIVE reported that many Al Ahly fans were clamouring for the South African's presence in the dugout following the Red Devils' disastrous 2-0 Egypt Cup final loss to arch-rivals Zamalek.

A few weeks before, many took to social media to vent their frustration with new coach Ricardo Soares, while also demanding the return of the 57-year-old Mosimane.

He responded on Twitter:

@AhmedEissa my brother, please do not regret my departure. Al Ahly did not fire me or push me to go. I have big respect for President Khatib and the entire board including all the supporters of Al Ahly. I will always cherish all our trophy celebrations."

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena does not regret not joining Pitso Mosimane at Al Ahly

Rulani Mokwena could have been in the coaching dugout at Al Ahly.

As reported by Sports Brief, the Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach revealed that Pitso Mosimane tried to take him with to Cairo after he was appointed as the Red Devils' head coach in October 2020 after many years of success with the Brazilians.

Mosimane recently resigned from Al Ahly unexpectedly, having signed a contract extension earlier this year.
