Government orders return of Kenya Prisons volleyball team detained in Egypt

- The Kenya Women's Volleyball team has been forced to withdraw from the Africa Club Championship

- The cash-strapped team was detained in Cairo, Egypt after failing to pay hotel bills

- The government has since ordered for their repatriation through the Kenyan Embassy in Cairo

The government has ordered for the return of the Kenya Prisons women's volleyball team a day after it was reported it faced eviction from their hotel in Cairo, Egypt after failing to pay the facility's bills.

TUKO.co.ke understand on Thursday, March 21, the Ministry of Interior and Coordination directed the Kenyan Embassy in Cairo to clear the team's pending bills and book their flight back home.

The ministry disclosed it had no information the team had jetted out of the country, adding it only learnt about the team's predicament through the media.

“Given the breach of protocol and the contravention of rules regarding public servants’ travel overseas, the government has immediately organized for their repatriation tonight," a statement from the ministry said.
"Whilst the government acknowledges and supports sports as one of the many sources of our national pride, we regret this turn of events, which has caused the people of Kenya undue embarrassment," the statement added.

The team's return to the country will see them end their campaign in the ongoing Women's Africa Club Championship in Egypt prematurely.

They were bundled out of the competition on Wednesday night, March 20, after losing their last pool 'D' match to Egypt's El Shams.

However, the team had a pending match against Burundi's USFA in the classification matches of position 9-16.

They now risk sanctions from from the Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB).
