Confusion reigns over the football status of Nsami Mighty Birds and Matiyasi FC.

The two Limpopo-based sides were suspended for life following their league game between each other, which ended 59-1.

As reported by The South African, Nsami Mighty Birds scored 41 own goals during that encounter.

Matiyasi, who were chasing promotion to the ABC Motsepe League, were 16 goals behind league leaders, Shivulani Dangerous Tigers heading into the came.

They then won 59-1, but Shivulani Dangerous Tigers also secured a big victory, beating Kotoko Happy Boys 33-1. The shocking scoreline made headlines across the world. The South African Football Association (SAFA) then banned all four teams for life.

FarPost now reports that the SAFA’s appeals committee has lifted the life bans on Nsami Mighty Birds and Matiyasi FC after both sides appealed the decision.

Advocate Tiyani Vukeya, who represented Nsami, confirmed that the appeals board ruled in favour of Nsami and SAFA was ordered to refund the team the appeal fee and the legal cost of the appeal. He added that the ruling applies to both Nsami and Matiyasi.

SAFA Mopani region president Vincent Ramphago disputes the fact that the ban has been lifted, The Mopani region is where Nsami and Matiyasi both competed. Ramphago maintains that the ban stands because they were never served with the appeal papers.

“It still stands. We are not apologetic about it. We have suspended the teams permanently,” he said.

Matiyasi FC notched up the impressive result while chasing promotion to the ABC Motsepe League.

They hammered Nsami Mighty Birds 59-1 on the final day. The South African Football Association investigated the result after 41 of the goals were all own goals by Mighty Birds.
