- Morocco were expected to make light work of Liberia but The Atlas Lions struggled against the lowly-ranked side
- Morocco tops the group with two wins out of two while South Africa and Liberia are yet to score any points
Liberia and Morocco faced off in the second game of Group K, a game Morocco was expected to win quite comfortably.
The clash, though considered a home game for Liberia, took place at the Stade Mohamed V Stadium in Morocco, the same stadium where the CAF Champions League final was played.
After their victory against South Africa in the opening game, many expected the Moroccan side to breeze past Liberia. The Atlas Lions were relentless against Bafana and many felt that the scoreline did not reflect their dominance in the game.
Against Liberia they looked a totally different side though. At the end of the first half, Morocco only had four attempts, all of which were off target.
Morocco has two good freekicks just outside the box but failed to convert either. Achraf Hakimi’s freekick hit the wall and was deflected wide, while Romain Saïss’ attempt flew over the bar. Liberia only had two attempts, both of which were also off target. Kpah Sherman cut a lonely figure up front as he hardly had a chance on the ball.
The second half lacked any spark until Morocco were handed a penalty in the 56th minute. Substitute, Moussa Sanoh, was found guilty of bringing down Amine Harit in the box. The decision appeared contentious, though.
Fayçal Fajr stepped up and converted the spotkick to give his side the lead. The goal seemed to break Liberia’s spirit as they conceded a second goal just a minute later. Youssef En-Nesyri ran onto a through ball and calmly finished to make it 2-0.
Morocco would go on to win the game by the same margin, never really threatening to make it three.

Relentless Morocco breaks Bafana Bafana hearts with a late goal in Africa Cup of Nations qualifier
Morocco scored a late goal to deny South Africa a hard-earned point in the Group K opener of the AFCON qualifiers. Morocco started the game much stronger and dominated much of the first half.
The second half was played at a slower tempo than the first half, but both sides had chances to kill the game off.
Yusuf Maart and Percy Tau both squandered Bafana’s best chances, while Williams was once again called into action to save Bafana’s blushes. Ayoub El Kaabi broke Bafana hearts when he smashed home a volley in the 87th minute of the game to claim victory.
