  • The Robert Matano-coached side had to wait until the last day to put off interest from Kakamega Homeboyz who were looking for their maiden title
  • Vihiga Queens, who won reclaimed their Women’s title will also walk away with 1 million from the same committee after winning the league with four games to spare

Tusker FC are set to pocket two million Kenya shillings after successfully retaining the Kenya Premier League title on Sunday.

The Brewers fended off challenges from Kakamega Homeboyz to lift their 13th crown and become the second-most successful Kenyan club behind record champions Gor Mahia.

The Football Kenya Federation Transition Committee is expected to remit the funds to Tusker. The side will, however, not have the luxury of representing Kenya in the lucrative CAF Champions League as the country is still banned by FIFA.

Kenya has been under suspension since February after the FIFA General Assembly ratified a proposal to ban the country due to government interference.

FKF officials led by President Nick Mwendwa had been ousted from office. Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed appointed a Caretaker Committee, which was replaced by a Transition Committee that has been overseeing the top-tier league in the country.

Vihiga Queens, meanwhile won the Women’s title and will get a one million cash prize. Queens had won the title last month with four matches of the season left to play.

Boniface Nyamunyamu’s side won their fourth title in five years, with the only exception coming last season after Thika Queens pipped them to the title.

Kangemi Ladies, Kayole and Bunyore Starlets were relegated to the lower division in the Women’s League.

How Tusker won the Kenya Premier League title

Sports Brief had earlier given a detailed account of how Tusker won the Premier League. Tusker FC retained the Kenya Premier League crown following their 2-0 win over Posta Rangers in the final game of the season.

The Brewers needed a victory in that particular match to stand a chance of successfully retaining the domestic title.

The Robert Matano-tutored side were neck-to-neck in the title race with Kakamega Homeboyz, with nothing to separate them into the final round of matches of the season on Sunday, June 12.
