FootballMamelodi Sundowns, Cape Town City, Royal AM and Marumo Gallants Qualify for CAF Competitions
- With the 2021-2022 DStv Premiership season concluded, South Africa's entrants into next year's CAF competitions have been confirmed
- Champions Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City will have their names in the pot of the Champions League draw
- Royal AM and Marumo Gallants will represent the land in the Confederations Cup tournament
The end of the 2021-22 DStv Premiership has seen the confirmation of who will represent South Africa in next season's CAF competitions.
Champions Mamelodi Sundowns will look to add to its lone star by campaigning in the Champions League. They will be joined by Cape Town City in their inaugural campaign in this competition by virtue of having finished as runners-up.
Royal AM had to wait until after Orlando Pirates' defeat to SuperSport to know that as third-place finishers, they would be automatically thrown into the lot of the Confederations Cup.
Because the Brazilians had also won the Nedbank Cup on the way to the Treble, this complicated matters a bit. This is because the winner of this competition - South Africa's FA Cup - qualifies for the Confederations Cup. By design, Marumo Gallants, who were the losers in the final, then became the country's second entry into African club football's secondary competition.
Only Sundowns and Pirates have won the Champions League throughout its history. Kaizer Chiefs won the African Cup Winners' Cup in 2001, before it would be changed to the Confederations Cup a few years later.
Kick Off reported that Pirates was defeated by ES Sahel 2-1 on aggregate in the 2015 Confederations Cup final. SuperSport United was defeated by the same aggregate margin two years later in the final by TP Mazembe, as per Soccer Laduma.
A couple of weeks ago, it became 0-3 as far as Mzansi teams are concerned in the final of the competition as the Buccaneers lost 5-4 on penalties in Nigeria to RS Berkane after the match ended 1-1.
SuperSport United sneaks into Top 8 at the expense of lacklustre Orlando Pirates in DStv Premiership
SuperSport United will be playing in next season's MTN 8 competition.
As reported on Sports Brief, this is after Matsatsantsa easily overcame a feeble Orlando Pirates 2-0 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Monday night.
Fortune Makaringe's unfortunate own goal and Gampani Lungu's penalty - from a Happy Jele foul that saw him receive a red card - were enough for the victory.
