In a statement by the Nigeria Football Federation which was made available to the press, the 2023 Africa U20 Cup of Nations will be hosted by Egypt next year.

Nigeria took the lead against Cote d’Ivoire as early as the fifth minute courtesy of Daniel Daga who sneaked through the opposition defenders to head home following a delicious cross.

The Flying Eagles who are seven-time champions of the tournament then continued to search for a second goal, but they missed a number of chances to extend their lead.

They were made to pay dearly for the missed opportunities when the Ivorians equalised moments before halftime from an intelligently-taken free-kick at the edge of Nigeria’s eighteen-yard box.

It was 1-1 at the end of regulation time inside the Stade General Seyni Kountche as the encounter was forced into extra time.

Forward Ibrahim Yahaya got the winner for Nigeria in the 111th minute of play when he tucked in from the penalty spot to make it 2-1.

Nigeria will square up against neighbours Benin Republic in Saturday’s final.

Kwara United star celebrates national team call up

Sports Brief earlier reported that following his impressive form in the Nigerian Professional Football League this season, Kwara United star Afeez Babatunde Nosiru has earned a Super Eagles call up.

The youngster was named in the 30-man list of players that will prosecute the forthcoming international friendlies against Ecuador and Mexico.

Having missed out on the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Nigeria will now focus on qualifying for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and a number of friendly matches have been line up.
