After failing at the final hurdle last season, Richards Bay FC are finally heading to the DStv Premiership.

As a result of winning the title of champions of the National First Division, the Natal Rich Boyz also pocket R3 million, The South African reported. Their rise to the DStv Premiership hasn’t been easy though.

Last season Richards Bay were leading the GladAfrica Championship with three games to go but threw that lead away and finished third. Owner, Sfiso ‘Jomo’ Biyela was said to be so upset by the team’s collapse, that he fired the technical team before the promotion playoffs.

Biyela’s team have put that disappointment behind them this season as they hung on to win the title despite being chased all the way by the University of Pretoria.

Speaking after the team won the league, Biyela touched on the disappointment of last season, The Citizen reported

“We are happy that we are here today… happy that the supporters came out in numbers and that the players made us proud. Last year it was disappointing but today we are celebrating,” he said.

Biyela also spoke about the prospect of having youngsters competing in the DStv Diski Challenge as it will allow for more young talent to be unearthed.

Richards Bay FC book automatic promotion to DStv Premiership with exciting draw against Cape Town Spurs

Richards Bay FC are heading to the DStv Premiership. The Natal Rich Boyz booked an automatic spot into South Africa’s top-flight by finishing on top of the GladAfrica Championship, Sports Brief reported.

Needing just a draw to secure the top spot, The Rich Boyz took on Shaun Bartlett’s Cape Town Spurs in their final game and managed to do just that. Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Richards Bay could not find the back of the net.

Somila Ntsundwana was a constant menace to the Cape Town Spurs side and often got crosses into the box throughout the game. His teammates didn’t make the most of the numerous chances he created.
