Cameras zoomed in to Guardiola, and the Spaniard looked deep in thought and at some point, he buried his face in his hands, despite his side enjoying a 4-3 lead prior to kick-off.

It remains unclear what exactly agitated the Manchester City boss, but several reports claim Ancelotti shared an inspirational video with his Real Madrid squad prior to the second leg.

Fan reaction

Fans on Twitter who saw the video were quick to point out that Guardiola was possibly overthinking the game once again, as has been the case with the tactician in the past.

"Pep’s overthinking again," said one fan.
"oh no he’s overthinking again." Added another.
"He just put one eyebrow up and Pep’s gone into overthink mode."

How the game went

Quite tragically, Manchester City ended up crashing out of the Champions League in the semi final once again as Real Madrid won 3-1 on Wednesday, May 4 and 6-5 on aggregate.

It was an extraordinary tie and the second leg, despite not living up to the goals in the first leg, had its fair share of drama.

Riyad Mahrez gave Manchester City the lead on Wednesday with a smart finish past Thibaut Cortois with less than 15 minutes to go.

With barely minutes on the clock and Man City enjoying a 5-3 aggregate lead, substitute Rodrygo scored two quick fire goals to force the game to extra time.

Los Blancos would go on to get a penalty in the 95th minute, which Karim Benzema buried with ease to take the tie away from Manchester City.

Guardiola’s reaction

Speaking on the defeat, Guardiola was the first to admit it was a tough one to take.

"I have had defeats in the Champions League, I had tough defeats at Barcelona when we could not reach the final.” He said.
"But it is tough for us, I cannot deny that. We were so close to the Champions League final.”
