Ghanain Born Forward Reveals Why he Rejected Black Stars For Qatar

Mohammed Muntari has explained why he committed his international allegiance to Qatar ahead of Ghana.

The 28-year-old opted to represent the Arab country despite being born to Ghanaian parents.

Muntari, who will be in action for Qatar at the 2022 World Cup, has made 43 appearances and scored 12 goals so far.

And in an interview with TV3, as quoted by GhanaWeb, Muntari disclosed his decision to switch allegiance to represent Qatar is purely for football reasons.

According to him, he will choose them over the country of his birth on any day with no regrets.

“Truth be told, I will choose Qatar. I will choose Qatar every single day [because of] what they did for me [and] what they are doing for my people,” Muntari said.
“Deep inside, I knew I took the right decision so if you ask me to do it again, I will choose Qatar over Ghana. I am not saying anything bad about my beloved country Ghana,” he added.

Born in Kumasi in 1993, Muntari to Qatar at age 19. He switched international allegiance in 2012 and made his senior debut for the Qatari national team in 2014 against Estonia, where he scored his first goal.

Muntari has played for four different clubs - El Jaish, Lekhwiya, Al-Duhail and Al Ahli - since his arrival in Qatar.

The lanky striker won the Qatari championship in both 2017 and 2020, and also clinched the Emir Cup and the Qatar Super Cup.

Mohammed Muntari is expected to lead the attack of Qatar at the 2022 World Cup.
