  • Jorginho seemed to blame the VAR for his penalty miss in the London derby against West Ham on Sunday
  • The Italian, known as a penalty specialist, had a tame effort saved by Lukasz Fabianski
  • He said the lengthy VAR check made him lose his focus, hence the fairly poor penalty
  • Chelsea went five points clear of Arsenal thanks to the 1-0 win over West Ham, with Christian Pulisic scoring a late winner

Chelsea ace Jorginho has come up with some staggering claims on why he missed a penalty against West ham in the London derby over the weekend.

Jorginho, known for his prowess from the penalty spot, uncharacteristically missed his spot-kick in the second half of the clash, with the game finely poised at 0-0.

Lukasz Fabianski had an easy time-saving Jorginho’s penalty, which was quite tame, despite the Italian applying his trademark skip before shooting.

In his first sentiments since the incident, Jorginho, who finished third in the Ballon d’Or appeared to blame referee Michael Oliver for his miss.

According to Jorginho, the lengthy VAR check somehow made him lose focus in the run up to taking the penalty.

“This sort of pressure, especially in games like this when you need to win and it's last minute, and you try to isolate your mind from all that pressure even though it's hard,” he said as quoted by The Sun.
“And then you have the VAR so it takes longer, it's harder to keep focus.”
“What you need to do and what I try to do is I try to isolate my mind of all this pressure, and unfortunately this time it didn't work.
“When you have that little moment of doubt that's usually when you make the mistake. Maybe I had too much time to think about it, I don't know.

His miss ended up mattering very little, as Christian Pulisic eventually found the winner for his side in the 90th minute by guiding in a low cross.

Jorginho on Antonio Rudiger

Jorginho also recently paid a glowing tribute to defender Antonio Rudiger, who is set to depart Chelsea at the end of the season.

Rudiger who has been an important player in the Chelsea team is expected to leave the London based club on a free transfer this summer, with Real Madrid his most likely destination.

"He's a big personality and he's helped us a lot.

"We've had amazing times here; he's a good friend of mine and of course if he leaves everyone at the club will miss him, not just me."

Rudiger moved to Premier League side Chelsea from Roma in 2017 and the big central defender has featured in 127 games for the Blues netting nine goals.
