FootballRalf Rangnick pin points exactly what Manchester United needs ahead of Ten Hag era
- Ralf Rangnick warned Manchester United that not much would be solved if they continued to address surface-level issues at the club
- The interim boss is set to take up a consultancy role at United once his spell at the dugout comes to an end
- According to Rangnick, United needs an “open heart operation” instead of “minor cosmetic surgery”
Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick has come up with a brutally honest assessment of what the team needs ahead of the arrival of Erik Ten Hag.
Rangnick has been unable to turn the clubs’s fortunes around after taking over from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer late last year, and the German now says the club will have to have an "open-heart operation" instead of “minor cosmetic surgery” to fix its problems.
While speaking ahead of United’s game against Arsenal, Rangnick called on positive energy for the incoming manager.
"If he gets that (positive energy), if the right lessons are being learned, this could be one of the few good things about the season we are going through.” He said as quoted by BBC.
"At least you know which kind of screws we need to turn, things we need to change, and, if that happens, why should Erik ten Hag not be able to be as successful as he was at Ajax?
"It's not the manager's quality - it's changing all the other things that have brought the club into a position we are in right now.
“Open heart surgery”
At the end of the season, Rangnick is set to move into a consultancy role at Manchester United.
He is set to begin helping the club’s hierarchy make some crucial decisions ahead of the new campaign in a bid to get the club back to its glory days.
United hit a new low recently when they were thrashed 4-0 by title-chasing Liverpool, who have now beat them by an aggregate score of 9-0 this season.
In addition, the club is set to complete a fifth year without winning any silverware, with the last taste of a trophy coming during Jose Mourinho’s tenure.

FootballAll these factors combined are the reason why Rangnick believes the club’s problems are no longer surface level.
"Now it's only about how you can solve them. Not minor cosmetic things. This is an open heart operation. If everyone realises this has to happen and works together, it doesn't need to take years.” He added.
