As reported by Sport Bible, FIFA president Gianni Infantino has proposed the idea of making football games 100 minutes long.

The reason behind the strategy is that studies show that many football games don’t have 90 full minutes of gameplay. Time wasting, injuries and general time spent before set-pieces account for a significant amount of time spent where the game isn’t played.

The issue comes from the fact that the ball doesn't stay in play for long in football matches, certainly not as long as might be expected.

Studies have shown that in UEFA Champions League games, the ball remains in play for only 64.7% of the actual match. In Serie A, it’s only in play for 63.2% of the game while the English Premier League has the worst number of all of Europe’s big leagues. The ball is only in play for 62% of the game in England’s top flight.

England's first division is even worse though, as studies show that the ball is only in play for 57.2% of the game.

Infantino is therefore hoping that by increasing the number of minutes, fans can benefit from more action. The new rule would still have to be approved by the International Football Association Board before it can be implemented at games.

Another regulation that could soon make its debut as well, is the use of semi-automated offside technology, CBS Sports reported.

The technology was on trial at the FIFA Club World Cup. The technology provides the Video Assistant Referee with more information in the case of offside decisions and will greatly reduce the number of minutes spent on tight calls.

Jubilation across the world as FIFA officially scraps the stunning idea of staging the World Cup every two years

The world’s football governing body FIFA has scrapped the idea of staging the World Cup every two years after its president, Gianni Infantino, made a U-turn, Sports Brief earlier reported.

SunSport reports that the plan to have a biennial tournament has been publicly ditched, with Infantino stating he was not behind the stunning idea.

The idea of having the World Cup has been met with backlashes and the FIFA boss seemed to have aimed a jibe at former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger during a conference.
