  • Experienced referee Mike Dean is reportedly in his final season as an on-field referee for the English Premier League
  • The 53-year-old is regarded as one of the most recognisable officials in England's top flight
  • Dean, who has shown more red cards than any other top division referee, is set to become a full time video assistant referee (VAR)

English referee Mike Dean has reportedly announced that he will be retiring from football at the end of the 2021/22 season, according to The Telegraph.

The 53-year-old has been a Premier League official since 2000 and has been involved in over 600 games.

Dean has been part of a lot of controversy over the years for his decision-making, especially in some big games.

Dean was initially supposed to retire last year, but postponed it for another year and will hang up his boots at the end of the season.

He is the only referee in the English Premier League history to show 100 red cards in the competition.

Dean is likely to be followed into retirement by a string of high-profile Premier League officials over the next few years. Andre Marriner, Martin Atkinson, Kevin Friend, Jon Moss and Graham Scott are all over the age of 50 and will be considering quitting in the not-so-distant future.

Dean gave a rare interview to the Peter Crouch Podcast in February 2020 in which he discussed the 'confidence' and 'arrogance' he has in his ability as a Premier League referee.

He said:

'There's a touch of arrogance about me when I walk out on the pitch, I know there is. But there's also a lot of confidence in myself because I believe in my own abilities.
'Because of the way I referee, if the ball comes towards me I won't jump out the way, I'll let it go between my legs. That's just how it is.
'I love a stepover… I do. You just do it, I love the job I do and with the way I referee it comes out that I enjoy what I do.'

Central referee Emmanuel Adu Quansah and his assistants Courage Kuedufia and Jaspa Adenyo were victims on the day; after the top-flight game ended 1-1 at the Aliu Mahama Stadium.

On the matchday, RTU took the lead through Baba Kushibi in the 32nd minute but an Eric Kwakwa strike in the 71st minute gave the visitors a well-deserved point.

Video of Ghanaian Referee Running for His Life in a Division One Game Drops

An assistant referee in Ghana's Division One League had to run for his life after fans chased him for disallowing a goal between New Edubiase and Bekwai Youth FC.

New Edubiase had scored from a corner-kick but the linesman deemed it as offside which led to supporters of the club attacking him.

In a video posted on Twitter, spotted by Sports Brief, the linesman and his colleague officials had to run to save themselves from the irate fans.
