- Victor Gomes is referred to as Mr Penalty and fans are expecting him to make more controversial decisions today
South Africa will once again be represented at AFCON 2021 despite Bafana Bafana not qualifying for the continental tournament.
South Africa's Victor Gomes will take charge of the clash between Algeria and Ivory Coast in what is a much win game for the defending champions.
Gomes will have fellow South African, Zakhele Siwela as the linesman in the Group E clash in Douala Sport24 confirmed.
Gomes and Siwela aren't the only South Africans at the tournament though. As The South African confirmed, commentator Mark Gleeson was also called up for the tournament.
Gomes is known as Mr Penalty and is often trending on social media for some of his controversial decisions. During the Nigeria vs Sudan clash, Gomes awarded his sixth penalty of the season.
He recently became the source of many memes and jokes online after rumours circulated that he would be officiating the clash between Ghana and Gabon. South Africans saw it as the perfect form of revenge after they failed to qualify for AFCON due to a controversial penalty against Ghana.
Gomes didn't officiate the game but with Robert Marawa confirming that Gomes will be officiating the Algeria and Ivory Coast clash, South Africans are still proud of Mr Penalty himself.
