Wilshere is currently a free agent and has been training with Arsenal since last October in a bid to remain fit as he seeks a new club.

Metro UK reports Mikel Arteta is desperate to bolster his midfield options this winter but the Gunners are yet to secure any new signing.

A section of Arsenal fans now contend Wilshere could be set for a stunning return to the club after his latest social media activity.

The former England international uploaded a picture taken from the first-team training session earlier on Wednesday and accompanied the photo with two hourglass emojis.

The photo did not escape the eye of hawkeyed Arsenal supporters who suggested it was enough evidence Wilshere is in line to play for the north Londoners again.

One said:

"Looks like it’s happening, he has been training with us for a while now."

Another added:

"Please be what we think it is. He’s better than Elney and Xhaka and always gave 110% whenever."

Meanwhile, Arsenal are set to return to action on Thursday, January 20, to take on Liverpool in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.

The fixture comes at a time Arteta is without key players, with Granite Xhaka suspended, while the duo of Mohamed Elneny and Thomas Party is ruled out.
