Former Nigerian international Kanu Nwankwo has stated that the current Super Eagles squad can lift the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations title in Cameroon, Complete Sports reports.

The former Arsenal star is reacting to Nigeria’s outstanding performance in the group stage of the competition following a 2-0 win over Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday night.

The Super Eagles opened their account at the tournament by defeating the Pharaohs of Egypt 1-0 and Sudan 3-1 in their first two fixtures.

Reacting, the Atlanta Olympic gold medalist, in a tweet via his Twitter handle after the game, wrote:

“KAN U believe it? The #afcon group stage is over. Nigeria with the clean sheet.
“Well done super eagles. Thank you everyone for supporting. We are bringing this cup home, Trophy Believe.”

The three-time AFCON champions will be awaiting their next round of 16 opponents after the end of the Group matches on Thursday.

Goodluck Jonathan hails Super Eagles

Nigeria’s ex-president, Goodluck Jonathan, has commended the Super Eagles for continuing their superb form at the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

Sadiq Umar and William Troost-Ekong scored a goal each as Nigeria beat Guinea-Bissau 2-0 to maintain their 100 per cent record at the continental showpiece.

Jonathan took to social media to commend the squad, urging them to sustain the momentum as they chase for a fourth continental title. Jonathan wrote on Facebook:

“Well done Nigeria Super Eagles for advancing to the knockout stage of #AFCON2021 tournament in Cameroun with exemplary 100% performance.
“This is a clear demonstration of the Nigerian resilient spirit and knack for winning.
“I wish the Eagles more victories in the games ahead and urge them to sustain this momentum as we aim for the ultimate prize.”

Egypt defeat Sudan to reach AFCON Round of 16

Sports Brief earlier reported that the Pharaohs of Egypt are through to the knockout phase of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon defeating Sudan 1-0.

Having lost their opening fixture to Nigeria, the Pharaohs picked up a win against Guinea-Bissau in their second game, before defeating Sudan 1-0 in their last group game.

Thanks to a sensational header by Mohamed Abdelmoneim whose lone striker was enough to seal all three points for his side.
