  • Hopeful Bafana Bafana supporters were excited at the prospect of trigger-happy Victor Gomes refereeing the match between Ghana and Gabon
  • This was on the back of ill-feeling between South Africa and Ghana on the football pitch after a recent controversial encounter between the two nations
  • However, Algerian Lahlou Benbraham will take control of the match tonight, which did not stop locals from taking digs at Ghana

The strictest referee on the African continent Victor Gomes will NOT be the man in the middle as Gabon takes on Ghana at the African Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

The group C encounter will take place at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaoundé, with Algeria's Lahlou Ben Benbraham set to control matters. Gabon comes into the match after defeating Comoros 1-0, while Ghana is looking to avoid elimination after being defeated by Morocco 1-0.

There is currently bad blood between South Africa and Ghana on the football pitch currently, as reported on Sports Brief, stemming from a controversial encounter last November. The delicious irony of the much-feared South Africa Gomes possibly refereeing set up a tasty prospect.

Gomes once gave world-record tying five penalties in one match as per TimesLIVE, and the idea of seeing the penalty-and-red-card happy referee officiating a Ghana match excited petty Bafana Bafana fans.

"Victor Gomes, please give Ghana two red cards... award Gabon penalty as soon as Gabon scores then end match at 32 minutes!"

Petty Bafana Bafana fans troll Ghana after loss to Morocco at AFCON 2021

Bafana Bafana fans are clearly struggling to let go of South Africa's loss to Ghana in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

As reported on Sports Brief, they came out in numbers to celebrate Morocco's defeat of the Black Stars in the opening match of group at the 2021 African Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

A sucker-punch of a strike from Sofiane Boufal in the 83rd minute was the difference between the sides in what was an entertaining encounter at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaoundé.
