Ranking the 13 best powerlifters in the world right now

Powerlifting is a sport that combines strength with body position and calculated power, and its participants are some of the strongest and fittest people on the planet. Here are the best powerlifters in the world.

To succeed in a sport as technical as powerlifting, you must be well-prepared physically and mentally, and this is why most elite athletes spend large amounts of time and resources to keep themselves in shape. According to international rankings, here is a list of the 13 best powerlifters in the world right now.

13. Mohammed Sahad (Algeria)

The North African had a stellar 2022, winning the African Powerlifting and Bench Press championships and the World Classic Powerlifting Championships in the 120 KG weight class. He is widely regarded as one of the best African powerlifters of all time.

12. Jesus Olivares (USA)

Olivares has caused a stir within the fitness community with his performances this year after he squatted an impressive 455 KG (1003 pounds) during a training session in a video that went viral online. He broke the world deadlift record at the 2022 AMP nationals after lifting 402.5 kilograms (887.3 pounds). However, this feat remains an unofficial record as it was not attempted in an international competition. He went on to win the 2022 World Powerlifting championships in South Africa.

11 Jessica Buettner (Canada)

Jessica is another athlete who gained prominence on social media after her powerlifting videos went viral on Reddit and TikTok. Despite competing in the 72 KG weight class, she recently broke the Canadian deadlift record of 240 KG (530 pounds). Jessica also has the world junior squat record, which currently stands at 181.5 KG. What is more impressive is that she does all this while dealing with Type 1 Diabetes.

10.Oleksiy Bychkov (Ukraine)

The 37-year-old Ukrainian has been competing regularly in international competitions since 2005. As he dominated the 2022 World Open equipped Powerlifting championships in Denmark at his 120 KG category, he seems to get better with age. Bychkov currently holds 4 World records with a 430kg (948 Pounds)squat, a 356 kg (785 pounds) bench press, a deadlift of 387.5 kilograms (854 pounds), and a total of 1095 kg (2414 pounds).

9. Joy Nnamani (Britain)

Joy has impressed fans and fellow athletes with her tenacity and ability to manage challenging weights despite her low weight categories. The year 2022 was good for her as she broke the 57kg category deadlift world record with a lift of 228 kg (502 pounds) and was crowned World Champion. She previously broke the 52 kg category deadlift world record in 2018 with a lift of 192.5 kg (424 lb).

8. Emil Norling (Sweden)

Emil is a 3-time European champion, and he won his maiden World title in South Africa, coming first in the men's 105 kg category. Still, only 25 is considered an exciting prospect for the upcoming decade and a potential world record holder.

7. Amanda Lawrence (USA)

Amanda is another famous powerlifter who is well-liked by fans for her cheery attitude and cheerful personality. She is a three-time world champion in the Women's 57 KG category, winning in 2019, 2021, and 2022.

6. Antoine Garcia (France)

Antoine won the 59 kg category at the 2022 World Championships in South Africa. The three times French Champions also became the European champion in 2022 in Poland.

5. Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson (Iceland)

Nicknamed 'Thor' due to his similarity in appearance to the famous movie character, Julius has made a name for himself through his physique and ability to lift. He won the World's Strongest man challenge in 2018 and the Icelandic Powerlifting Championships. He is more popularly known for his film career as he is an actor on HBO's hit series Game of Thrones.

4. Isabella Von Weissenberg (Sweden)

Isabella is arguably one of the most popular female powerlifters in the world due to her powerlifting training videos and coaching career. The 32-year-old is also still an active competitor in local and international championships. She recently won the Australian national title in the 72 kg division.

3. Taylor Atwood (USA)

Taylor is considered one of America's greatest powerlifters of all time. He has a total of 3 World Championships, the most recent being this year in South Africa, and also holds multiple American national records. He also educates his fans on the technical aspects of powerlifting through his Youtube channel.

2. Jennifer Thompson (USA)

Jennifer is also considered one of the world's best female powerlifters of all time. She has won the world title 11 times and is still competing for titles aged 49. In October 2022, she unofficially broke the World Bench Press record with a 148.5 Kilogram (327.5 Pound) lift at a regional meet in Carolina.

1. Zydrunas Savickas (Lithuania)

Savickas is widely considered the greatest powerlifter of all time. In a career spanning 24 years, the Lithuanian has participated in over 100 local, regional and international competitions and has won on multiple occasions. He won the World's strongest man competition four times and Europe's strongest man three times. He is also the most influential powerlifter on social media, with over half a million followers on Instagram.
